How to Install Ubuntu with VMware Workstation

VMware Workstation Player allows you to run a second, isolated operating system on a single PC. With many uses ranging from a personal educational tool, to a business tool for providing a simplified experience to run a corporate desktop on a BYO device, Workstation Player leverages the VMware vSphere hypervisor to provide a simple yet mature.

VMware Workstation is the most popular Hypervisor Type 2 virtualization program developed by VMware. With this software, you can run multiple operating systems on your PC virtually. For example, installing Ubuntu on a virtual machine without installing Dual-Boot may be useful for the first trial.

The latest version of Ubuntu, 19.10, was released on October 17, 2019, under the code name Eoan Ermine. The most prominent feature of this release is that it now includes NVIDIA drivers in ISO image files.

How to Build Ubuntu on a Virtual Machine

First, setup VMware Workstation on your Windows operating system, and then download the ISO image file to your computer for installation.

Follow the steps below to install Ubuntu Linux step by step on Windows 10.

Step 1

After running VMware Workstation 15 Pro, click Create a Virtual Machine. In the Create New Virtual Machine window, select Custom (Advanced) and click Next.

Step 2

In the operating system selection window, select Linux/Ubuntu 64-bit and click Next.

Step 3

We recommend that you back up the virtual machine on an external HDD. Storing VMs on USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive will give you extra performance.

After configuring the backup of the virtual disk to a different location, click Next.

Step 4

Configure the processor setting for the virtual machine according to the hardware specifications of your computer and click Next.

Step 5

Configure a 4 GB RAM value for Ubuntu VM and click Next.

You can configure the network adapter settings of the virtual machine to run on VMware in the following window. Select the NAT configuration for the network setting and click Next.

Step 7

Select Store virtual disk as a single file to back up the virtual hard disk as a single file. In addition, after configuring the maximum disk size for the Ubuntu VM, select Allocate all disk space now. This option will allocate disk space on your host disk up to the disk size you specify.

Step 8

After creating a new machine for installation, click the Customize Hardware button.

Step 9

In the Hardware window, click on the processor device and select Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI in the Virtualization Engine section on the right to enable the virtualization feature.

Then, click on the CD/DVD device and click the Browse button to add the Ubuntu 19.10 ISO file.

Step 10

Locate the Ubuntu image file and select the image file and click the Open button.

Step 11

Now, click Power on this virtual machine to start the Linux OS installation.

Step 12

Wait for VMware Workstation to boot up the Linux system.

Step 13

When the installation wizard opens, click the Install Ubuntu button to start the installation.

Step 14

Select your preferred keyboard layout and click Continue.

Step 15

In the Updates and other software window, select Normal Installation and Download updates while installing Ubuntu and click Continue.

Step 16

To perform a clean installation, select the Erase disk and install Ubuntu option and click the Install Now button.

Step 17

Click Continue to confirm the changes to the disk.

Step 18

Select your location and click Continue to proceed with the setup.

Step 19

Create a user account for the Ubuntu virtual machine and click Continue.

Step 20

How to Install VMware Tools

After installing the Linux operating system on the virtual machine, you must install VMware Tools to share files between the host PC and the VM or configure the screen resolution to full screen.

VM Tools for Ubuntu version 19.10 installs automatically. Intel core i3 2120 drivers ethernet. However, for older versions 18.04, 18.10, 19.04, you need to do this manually.

Now, to install VM Tools on Ubuntu 18.10, follow the steps below.

Step 1

Click the VM / Install VMware Tools button to start the installation.

Step 2

Once the image file is mounted on the system, drag and drop the .tar.gz file to the desktop.

Step 3

After extracting the VMwareTools.tar.gz archive file to the folder, start Terminal here.

Step 4

To switch to root access on the terminal, execute sudo su, and then execute ./vmware-install.pl to install VMware Tools.

Step 5

After installing VMware Tools, reboot your system, and click View / Fit Guest Now to change the resolution of the virtual machine automatically.

Step 6

You can view the full-screen resolution of the Ubuntu virtual machine from the image below.

NOTE: In addition to the above steps, you can also execute apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop y in the terminal to install VMware Tools.
